I traveled to the US Virgin Islands on two occasions. The first was a day trip to St. Thomas from Puerto Rico that my wife and I took on our honeymoon in 1984. This was the beginning of my love affair with the Caribbean, and specifically the part that was not Spanish-speaking. Somehow all of the images that I might have absorbed from television and the print media came to life on that one day, and I was determined to visit again. I read a book published in 1970 called "Living in the Changing Caribbean," and though I continued living in Philadelphia, there was something appealing to imagining myself living on one of the Caribbean islands. The second visit took place in 2004, when I spent four days in St. Croix attending a folklore conference. All of the cultural encounters that I had dreamed of managed to squeeze themselves into that short visit. Not only did I get the chance to interact with scholars and practitioners of Caribbean culture, I also was invited to visit the homes of two islanders and attend a multicultural festival that was not part of the conference.
