If it’s endless stretches of pristine white sand that you want – then Antigua is the island for you. Home to 365 idyllic beaches (one for every day of the year) the island will surely not disappoint. Though it is tempting to stay in the locality and explore the island by foot, to discover all that the island has to offer, it’s best explored by car.
St Johns is the capital of Antigua, and it’s here that you can immerse yourself in the bustle of the island, far away from the tranquil and serene beaches. Expect to find a wealth of shops selling local goods and restaurants to tempt you with their sumptuous Antiguan cuisine. Antiguan delicacies include saltfish, lobster and fungie (similar to polenta). Whether you’re after fine dining or cheaper snacks from the many food stalls, Antigua has plenty to offer in the way of international and traditional cuisine. While you may be want to spend your time eating and shopping (and this is certainly recommended) a walk up the hill to the city’s cathedral is a must. On your way you’ll pass small local shops that line the ascent to the cathedral.
Antigua boasts year round sun, so any time you go you’re guaranteed sunbathing by day and balmy strolls by night. December until April tend to be the most popular times to visit, just after hurricaneseason, so avoid this if you want to find the island at its quietest. To find out more about all that this famous island has to offer, The Telegraph features a guide to Antigua on their cruise travel site, and much more information, tips and inspiration in their Caribbean cruise section.
